Sidley’s Dallas office opened in 1996 with a focus on intellectual property litigation. In 2013, the office more than doubled in size with the addition of a new team of commercial litigation and transactional lawyers. Our lawyers in Dallas have built highly ranked practices in commercial and patent infringement litigation, arbitration, internal investigations, corporate M&A, and private equity finance.
We are located in the new McKinney & Olive building in Dallas’ vibrant Uptown neighborhood. Our lawyers are extremely involved in the community and are well known for their leadership and charitable contributions.
The Dallas office typically offers a 10-week program for law students interested in one of the following areas of practice: complex commercial litigation, corporate M&A, global finance, restructuring, or intellectual property litigation. Being a part of the Dallas office affords you the opportunity to work in a small, close-knit environment while enjoying the resources and support of a large global firm.
Work Assignments
You will have numerous opportunities throughout the summer to gain hands-on experience and demonstrate your skills through real client projects.
Transactional associates will be introduced to a variety of work involving mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, joint ventures, business restructurings and other transactions. You will get a firsthand look at how a deal team works and how our lawyers devise creative and practical solutions to issues and problems that arise in today’s complex financing and business environment.
Litigation associates will be given substantive assignments that range from deposition outlines and witness prep to drafting motions and briefs. You may also get to see our lawyers in action by observing hearings and client meetings.
Professional Development
The Dallas office focuses on the individual development of each of our summer associates. We assign partner mentors as well as supervising mentors to serve as a personal resource and sounding board.
Our summer training program will help you further develop your legal research, writing, networking and other skills. You will have the opportunity to attend in-house CLE programs as well as educational workshops on topics including managing client and professional expectations. In addition, our summer associates often attend Dallas Bar Association and other locally sponsored educational and networking events.
Summer Life in Dallas
An important part of your summer experience is building relationships with your future colleagues. Throughout the summer you will be invited to attend a mix of large-scale and smaller social and networking events, and to participate in office-wide programming. We give you a chance to get to know our lawyers and your fellow summers both professionally and personally while also experiencing all that Dallas has to offer.
As a summer associate in Dallas, your calendar might include activities like:
- Sampling the area’s famously diverse cuisine at lunches, happy hours and dinners with associates and partners
- Attending Texas Rangers baseball games
- Team building while axe throwing or solving clues in a scavenger hunt
- Exploring all areas of Dallas
- Specialty Events such as a Lobster Bake and a Partner Progressive Dinner
